This trick is part of the Diabolo Trick Roadmap (available on Amazon) which is a skill tree (containing 337 tricks from 1 to 3 diabolos) designed to give you a personalized list of tricks you’re ready to learn, taking into account the tricks you already know.
The umbrella is a succession of suns alternating between clockwise and anticlockwise where you stop the sun before the diabolo comes back down. This trick slows down your diabolo, so make sure to have plenty of speed before starting the umbrella.
You can start the umbrella from either a clockwise or anticlockwise sun, but to exit the umbrella without the sun knot you will need to finish with the opposite sun you started with.
As always the tutorial is described for righties so if you are left handed switch right and left and also clockwise and anticlockwise in the step by step explanation.
Prerequisites
Step By Step Explanation
1. Give plenty of speed to your diabolo and start doing a clockwise sun.
2. When the diabolo passed your head and before it passes your right shoulder, lift both hands so your sticks are pointing up and slightly to the left (ie where you want the diabolo to go). Lock your wrists so the diabolo has to bounce back to the left.
3. Lower your hands while the diabolo goes from your right to your left.
4. When the diabolo passed your head and before it passes your left shoulder, lift both hands so your sticks are pointing up and slightly to the right. Lock your wrists so the diabolo has to bounce back to the right.
5. Lower your hands while the diabolo goes from your left to your right.
6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 for as long as you want/can. During the umbrella, your hands and sticks are drawing a big U starting from the top left to the top right going back and forth while your diabolo is drawing the top of an umbrella (or inverted U) back and forth. When your diabolo is down and on the right, your hands are up and on the left and vice versa.
7. To exit the umbrella, finish the anticlockwise sun (the one that goes from right to left) fully by letting the diabolo go all the way down. You will end up in the open string position and less speed to your diabolo.
