1D Tuto – Trapeze

The trapeze is a pretty easy trick to learn, especially if you have mastered the 3 prerequisites (next section of this tutorial).

You will need a decent amount of speed before the trick as it’s a long trick and the friction of the string will slow down your diabolo.

As always the tutorial is described for righties so if you are left handed switch right and left in the step by step explanation.

Prerequisites

Knowing the sun will help you learn the trapeze as the first part of the trick is the same motion as the sun.

The throw and catch will help with the middle part of the trapeze.

The waterfall will help you with the last part of the trick, to get out of the trapeze as it is the exact same movement.

Step By Step Explanation

  • 1- From the normal, open string position, swing your diabolo to your left as you would do for a sun, but keep your sticks shoulder width apart.
  • 2- You want the string to go around your left stick, so while the diabolo is in swinging motion, move your right stick back a bit.
  • 3- As diabolo begins to go back down, aim to catch it on the string by adjusting your right stick so that the string between the sticks is under the diabolo’s axle. This is the hardest part of this trick !

If the diabolo lands between you and the string, you can « cheat » and put the string under the diabolo afterwards. If the diabolo goes in front of the string, you will end up in an external wrap.

  • 4- You are now in the trapeze position. If the diabolo still has a lot of spin, you can catch your breath and even correct the tilt if need be.
  • 5- To return to the open string position, swing the diabolo back over the left stick in a counter clockwise motion.
