This trick is part of the Diabolo Trick Roadmap (available on Amazon) which is a skill tree (containing 337 tricks from 1 to 3 diabolos) designed to give you a personalized list of tricks you’re ready to learn, taking into account the tricks you already know.
The rocket start is an impressive trick that is fairly easy to learn. The only “difficulty” is step 3 (the pulling motion). It is a great 2D start to include in a performance for non-jugglers.
The rocket start is like the hand throw start, but without having to be careful how you throw the diabolo because it will automatically get speed and be aligned.
As always the tutorial is described for righties so if you are left handed switch right and left in the step by step explanation.
Prerequisites
You only need to know how to shuffle 2 diabolos (also called soloham), so you’ll only need to know one of the following :
- #82 (2) 2 low hover start
- #83 (2) 2 low wrap start
- #84 (2) 2 low throw start
- #134 (2) 2 high to 2 low
Step By Step Explanation
1. Start with one diabolo in the open string position on the floor, put the two stick in your right hand in a V and put the second diabolo on top of the 2 strings on the right of the first diabolo. Then pick the first diabolo and bring it over and to the right of the second diabolo.
2. Take the left stick with your left hand with the 2 diabolos still on the floor. Make sure the diabolos are lined up.
3. Pull both hands at the same time diagonally up and to the right. One diabolo will stay on the string and one will jump in the air and both diabolos will gain some speed in the process. If the jumping diabolo flies on your left, you’re not pulling enough to the right. The faster you pull the sticks, the higher the diabolo will go.
4. Catch the diabolo on the right part of the string and start shuffling.
What’s Next?
If you pull hard enough in step 3, you can use the rocket start as a 2 high start.
Otherwise you can start learning any 2 diabolo trick that has the 2 low shuffle as a prerequisite.
